I am looking for some imput, I currently own a 1996 JD 955 4WD,HST, 70A loader with 60" bucket,60" mid mount mower and turf tires,that I've loaded with windshield washer fluid(this will not rust your rims). The tractor I bought new and it currently has 350 hours on. I am thing of selling this tractor and looking at the JD 4400,4WD, HST, 430 loader with the 61" HD bucket, 60" mid mount mower and turf tires. Basically I am thinking of upgrading and I don't know if this is a good move. My tractor is in excellant shape, the only reason I am considering this, is I wish I had more lifting capacity with the loader and I feel my loader is a little slow. I like the actual physical size of my 955, so I am not looking for a physically larger tractor, just stronger and quicker. I was quoted a price of $24350.00 for the JD 4400 4WD,Hyro,Turf Tires, 430 Loader with 61" HD bucket, Bucket level Indicator and a 60" mid mount mower on a straight deal, no trade. Also, what is my tractor worth if I sold it out right? and what is it worth if I was to trade it in? Any imput is greatly appreciated. Thanks John

John have you tried the 4400 with loader? What is the lift capacity of the 70 against the 430? I think the hydraulics are a bit more on the 4400(my book is at work). Also look into adding a larger hydraulic pump to your 955...For under $1000 upgrade, you may transform your unit to stay for another 10 or 20 years. ....

I'll secound that about uping the hydro on your 955. If you like the size of the 955 then I'd probably stay with it if I could. The 4400 is quite a bit bigger and heavier than the 955 and I think the 955 does less damage to the turf than the 4400. ....

Hey,
I have both machines and have for a while. I agree the size factor is very relavent. Let me just say this. I have not used my 955 for a few years for moving material, I use it mostly as a mower. I use my 4400 for heavy duty things. The loader is much more robust as is the material moving ability of the 4400. The 955 is not even close when it comes to FEL work. I also agree that the machine will be harder on your turf if you get the old style front axle. Get the new axle!! I had both on mine and now with the new it is as good as the 955. There is a big power difference. I like both machines for what I use them for. But if it was one or the other I'd choose the 4400. If you have any other questions please ask away as I have 800hrs on the 955 and 300 on the 4400. ....

John, after reflecting on your post feel I should make a suggestion based on a hydraulic problem I had for a year and a half. I don't have a Deere, I have several Cub Cadets and one, a 7275 (hydro MFWD) equipped with FEL and hoe just couldn't seem to lift more than the 23hp gear drive Cub I also have. Several trips to the dealer, who claimed to have checked out EVERYTHING, revealed nothing. The problem got a little worse in cold weather, with the relief valve screaming with the slightest load. I brought it back to the dealer and they replaced the FEL loader valve, the problem continued. I called Cub and they told me what to do. After hooking up a test gauge I found the problem to be so easy to fix that I almost cried. The Cub, being an open center machine, has three pressure relief valves: 1 on loader frame, 1 built into the loader valve, and one built into the hydraulic block on the hoe. If any one is defective or out of adjustment the whole system suffers. I adjusted each according to spec.'s and the machine came alive (I did replace the valve on the loader frame as it couldn't hold the pressure). The system had been out of adjustment from day one, and here I was getting ready to move up to a bigger machine, just what I think the dealer wanted. So, before you get too far ahead of yourself, run a simple hydraulic pressure test. You may find all of the strength you are looking for is right in what you already have. Best of luck. ....

Good suggestion. I've got to get a pressure gauge myself. I guess these 'extra' relief valves are in the cylinder sides, rather than, the open centre side of the system. I understand they are intended to provide safety against load shock when the control valve is closed. Most 3ph's have a relief valve as well, and I believe mine is set at over 3,000 lbs, which is greater than the system relief valve setting. I haven't thought it through, but how to test relief valves that are supposed to be set higher than the system relief setting isn't obvious. It might be interesting to figure this one out. ....
